[Thinkpad] TP 760EL won't boot

Hi.

I've recently bought a TP 760EL. The day before I bought it, we ran a
few tests on it and everything was fine. However, when I tried starting
it after I bought it, it wouldn't boot - it didn't even get to the POST.
It has stayed in this condition, even after I disassembled the thing twice.

Whenever I turn the TP on, all I get is the little keyboard LCD showing:
- A blinking speaker icon
- The remaining battery power
- The status of the battery
- The "HDD in use" icon, which disappears after a while

There's no beep, no sound, nothing. The CD-ROM drive spins up for a
second, but except for that the TP does exactly nothing.

I've tried using the TP with and without the AC adapter, with and
without HDD/CD-Rom drive/battery... So far none of the standard IBM
problem solution strategies worked.

Anyone got an idea on whether the TP can be fixed or I've just bought a
big paperweight?

Usually that means that the suspend switch in the kewboard is stuck. If you
dis-assemble the palm rest you may be able to cure it, or you can change the
keyboard.

Well, I've taken it apart and checked the switch. According to my
multimeter it works.
Any other theory (except for "you're going to have to replace some part")?
If some part is broken I might be better off selling the other parts
individually on eBay and buying some other notebook...

Well, a stock test for this kind of problem is always to take it apart, clean
the contacts everywhere that you can, and put it back together again. I
can think of several times where that has worked. Not too often, but just
enough that I always try that when it looks bleak.
