Anybody remember what these error codes mean in a 380ED Thinkpad: 00161 and
00163. I am suspecting a dead CMOS battery, but this was originally a
Windows 95 machine, and hasn't been booted up for 7 years.

When you first turn it on, 161 and 163 come up in the upper left corner.
Then they come up on a big box, white with blue inside, a hand in a circle
with a slash and big letters ERROR. The numbers 00161 and 00163 are listed
below.

Of course it has a dead battery; it hasn't been used in probably four or
five years. We had the power cord connect when the failure occured.

Could this be a code for Dead CMOS battery? Or worse?

Yep, 161 means dead CMOS battery. The 163 is time/date not set, which
is caused by the dead battery.
